The above statement was made by Mr. Stoltenberg at the Center for Strategic Studies at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. NATO's website quoted Mr. Stoltenberg: "Let me reiterate the three main challenges that New Zealand, NATO and NATO allies are facing. The first is the increasing competition between major powers. And we see the consequences of that from Crimea, the illegal annexation of Crimea, to North Korea, Syria, and the South China Sea."

The NATO Secretary General also pointed out that the growing competition between the great powers also collapsed the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty. Mr. Stoltenberg emphasized: "We see Russia increasing its presence in the Middle East, Syria, and Russia also tries to interfere, to undermine confidence in democratic institutions in some NATO allies and many other places."

In addition, Mr. Stoltenberg also said that terrorism and cyber security threats are two other key challenges for NATO.
