The Japanese Defense Ministry will spend at least 27 trillion yen ($240 billion) from April 2019 to March 2024, with an average annual increase of 1.1 percent, the Nikkei newspaper reported. Currently, purchases of military hardware and salaries for soldiers account for 80 percent of Japan's defense spending. However, according to the plan, money for new equipment will be a separate fund to make it easier to buy military equipment from the United States.
Buying US military equipment could help Japan ease trade tensions with the US as US President Donald Trump has been urging Japan to buy more US goods, including military equipment, to reduce its trade deficit.

Hundreds of thousands of supporters of the United Malays National Organization (UMNO) and the Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) gathered in the heart of Kuala Lumpur to protest against the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD). The rally was initially aimed at opposing Malaysia's signing of the ICERD. However, after the government announced that it would not ratify the ICERD, the protesters turned to a march to thank the government for its decision, according toCNN.
The Malaysian government's failure to ratify the ICERD means that the Federal Constitution is maintained, which includes a social contract that provides for special privileges for Malays and indigenous people over those of Chinese and Indian origin.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved a $3.7 billion, three-year loan to Angola to help the southern African country diversify its economy and control corruption. The IMF said the loan would be used to help Angola restructure state-owned enterprises and improve economic governance.
In recent years, falling oil prices have plunged Angola’s economy, which depends on oil exports for 70 percent of its income, into crisis and high poverty rates. Since taking office in September 2017, President Joao Lourenco has pledged to step up anti-corruption efforts, engage in dialogue with opposition groups, diversify the economy and attract foreign investment.
