Russian media on July 5 quoted a military source as saying that in 2017, Russia will deploy two "Podsolnukh" systems capable of controlling a 200-nautical-mile coastal area in the Baltic and Black Seas.

A similar radar system is expected to be deployed in Crimea, the source added, which will be capable of detecting any warship passing through the Bosphorus Strait.

The "Podsolnukh" radar was successfully tested in 2006. Russia has currently deployed three "Podsolnukh" systems on combat duty in the Okhotsk Sea, the Sea of Japan and the Caspian Sea.

The Podsolnukh over-the-horizon radar system is a state-of-the-art warning system for naval warships, which can detect long-range flying targets thousands of kilometers over the horizon from the radar deployment location – a capability superior to conventional radar systems.

In addition to its long-range capabilities, Podsolnukh can closely track close-range targets operating within a range of about 450 km./.
