According to ancient Chinese legend, the God of Wealth is the historical figure Fan Li, a loyal minister of King Goujian of Viet. He is one of the gods who wholeheartedly assisted King Viet in times of trouble.
After assisting the king in pacifying the country, Pham Lai and his lover Tay Thi left the officialdom to live in seclusion. From then on, Pham Lai became a famous successful and wealthy merchant, so he was called Dao Cong by the people and was honored as the God of Wealth. From then on, every 10th day of Tet, people worshiped him to pray for a prosperous year, with money filling their homes.
According to another legend, the God of Wealth is the God of money and fortune in heaven who "fell" to earth because he was drunk. The God of Wealth came to earth and brought luck to the families he visited. When the God of Wealth flew back to heaven on the 10th of January, people took this day as the God of Wealth's birthday and believed that buying gold would bring good fortune.
Especially in recent years, every time the God of Wealth’s day comes, the image of people lining up to buy gold is no longer rare. Many people believe that buying gold on this day will bring good luck for the whole year.

According to feng shui expert Hoang Son Cong, the practice of buying gold for luck on God of Wealth Day has only appeared in recent years and does not entirely stem from ancient customs.
In the past, on the day of the God of Wealth (ie January 10), people (especially business families) often cleaned the altar of the God of Wealth, prepared offerings including seafood or roast pork, flowers, fruits, and wine. Then, people bought a silver bar or took a new coin and put it in a jar to store, with the hope of receiving fortune all year round.
However, with the development of society, instead of storing silver or new money, along with rumors, people rushed to buy gold. If not careful, this can lead to buying fake gold, or getting tired of jostling and pushing.
Folklore researcher Nguyen Hung Vy said that in Taoist books, there is a whole page written about the God of Wealth Day and it does not say that it is necessary to buy gold on this day to bring luck. Depending on each person's point of view, if an item is considered valuable, then buy that item, in exchange for peace of mind, and consider it as bringing luck into the house during the New Year.
If you still choose gold for the purpose of hoarding, according to experts, when buying gold on the day of God of Wealth, people should choose a reputable gold shop that ensures quality; should buy a 0.5-2 chi smooth round ring, choose the blister type for convenience when selling later so that it will not lose value. If buying gold bars, you need to have a serial number, check the age of the gold, as well as invoices and documents to avoid buying fake gold.
