Nghe An: 'Miracle' plant to cure impotence in high demand

The lang tree, also known as southern ginseng or bird's feet, usually grows in the forests of Thanh Hoa and Nghe An. In Quynh Luu, the lang tree is picked by people from the mountainous communes of Tan Thang, Quynh Thang, Quynh Chau... in the forest for use, then the seeds are brought back to plant in their home gardens.

Ms. Vu Thi Bich Que - a household growing the lang tree in Quynh Thang commune said: The leaves of the lang tree are edible and good for health, so people pick them for use. After that, people uproot the saplings in the forest and bring them home to plant in their gardens. Currently, many households in Quynh Thang commune grow and propagate this type of tree.

Mrs. Que's family is the largest grower in the commune with more than 1,000 trees. The leaves of the lang tree are harvested after 5 months of planting; young leaves and young leaves sprout the most from January to June, while the remaining leaves are harvested all year round. With more than 1,000 trees, Mrs. Que's family earns about 50 million VND/year.

The leaves are woody, 1/2m - 2m high, with 5-6 lobed leaves similar to the ivy but with serrated edges, thin, light green leaves, and prominent brown veins. In Quynh Luu, the leaves have become a familiar dish for the locals. To have a delicious and attractive leaves soup, people often cook the leaves with shrimp, minced lean meat, herring, freshwater fish...

Because the lang tree has so many uses, traders everywhere come to the mountainous areas of Quynh Thang and Tan Thang communes... to buy it.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong - a trader in Quynh My commune said, starting from January, we often go to households growing lang to buy at 25 thousand VND/kg in the garden; each day we buy about 50-70 kg of leaves; sell at the market at 2-3 thousand VND/bunch.

Mr. Le Van Nga - Chairman of Quynh Thang Commune People's Committee said that in the commune, there are many households propagating the plant; some households have grown the plant themselves to sell at the price of 15-20 thousand VND/plant. The demand for using the plant is increasing, the locality will encourage people to develop and expand the area of ​​planting the plant, combined with processing the plant into a number of products for widespread consumption in the market inside and outside the province.
