(Baonghean.vn) - 15 years ago, while on border patrol duty, border guard Va Ba Giai was killed by a series of bullets from a group of strangers.

On March 3, at Pha Lom village (Tam Hop commune, Tuong Duong), Tam Hop Border Guard Station held an inauguration ceremony for the memorial stele of heroic martyr Va Ba Giai. Attending the ceremony were representatives of the Provincial Border Guard Command, leaders of Tuong Duong and Tan Ky districts, and a number of related units.

Martyr Va Ba Giai was born in 1975 in Muong Long commune, Ky Son district. In September 1995, he was sent to a border reconnaissance officer training course, then was transferred by his superiors to Border Guard Station 543 Ky Son and then transferred to Border Guard Station 551 in Tuong Duong.

On July 26, 2004, while on duty, the task force led by Giai discovered two strangers carrying two backpacks and a flintlock gun entering Vietnam from Laos. When the team checked their papers, the strangers ran away, so they deployed a team to chase them. However, the authorities then encountered another group of strangers. This group immediately opened fire on the border guards, killing Va Ba Giai.
