When the patient was admitted to the hospital, the tumor had caused serious complications: severe mitral valve regurgitation, heart failure (dilated left ventricle, significantly reduced ejection fraction), accompanied by a stroke with hemiplegia.

Previously, patient Duong Thanh Xuan (55 years old, Nghi Thuy, Cua Lo town) discovered a large left atrial myxoma in his heart. Due to arriving at the hospital late, the patient suffered many dangerous complications, directly threatening his life.

In the past, the patient often had severe, prolonged coughing spells that caused shortness of breath, chest tightness, and fainting spells, so he went to many places for examination, including a higher-level hospital. Recently, at a higher-level hospital, the patient was diagnosed with a left atrial myxoma, so surgery was indicated.

While waiting for surgery, the patient had a stroke and could not undergo surgery and was transferred to Nghe An General Hospital for treatment.

On July 12, the patient was examined and treated at Nghe An General Hospital. Here, through ultrasound, the doctor discovered a large, mobile myxoid tumor in the patient's heart, partially prolapsed through the mitral valve into the left ventricle. The tumor caused serious complications: severe mitral valve regurgitation, heart failure (dilated left ventricle, significantly reduced ejection fraction), accompanied by a stroke with hemiplegia.

After a period of stable cerebral infarction treatment at the Neurology Department, the hospital held a consultation with the Board of Directors and doctors from related specialties. The consultation reached a consensus: This is a difficult case with a high risk of death, but the patient needs surgical intervention as soon as possible.

The doctor explained in detail the danger of the surgery and advised the patient to stay or be transferred to a higher level. However, the family trusted the expertise of the hospital's doctors and did not request a transfer to a higher level.

On July 22, the patient underwent major surgery. “We performed a 5x4cm myxoma resection in the patient’s heart chamber. More importantly, we successfully repaired and preserved the mitral valve. This is a difficult technique, but much more superior than artificial heart valve replacement, bringing many benefits to the patient: saving a large amount of money, good for heart function and convenient for future medical treatment.” - Dr. Nguyen Huu Nam, Head of Thoracic Surgery Department, commented.

After surgery, the patient is closely monitored in the Department of Surgical Resuscitation. Despite having to go through three ventricular fibrillations after surgery and having to shock the heart many times to return to sinus rhythm, with all their efforts, the doctors were able to save the patient from death. Five days after surgery, the patient was transferred to the Thoracic Surgery Department for treatment and gradually stabilized. He is expected to be discharged home this weekend.
