Nghe An: Green vegetables are scarce and prices have increased sharply after floods

August 1, 2017 07:08

(Baonghean.vn) - After prolonged storms, green vegetables in Nghe An became scarce and prices increased much higher than before.

According to a survey at traditional markets, after nearly a week of continuous rain and storms, the price of green vegetables has increased sharply. The reason is that due to the impact of the recent rain and storm, vegetable growing areas in Vinh city, Nam Dan, Hung Nguyen, Quynh Luu... have all suffered heavy damage. The supply of this item has decreased significantly, so green vegetables are scarce, and the selling price has doubled or tripled compared to before.

At markets in Vinh city such as Quang Trung, Quan Bau, Hung Dung markets..., the price of mustard greens increased from 7,000 - 8,000 VND/kg to 18,000 VND/kg; squash increased from 5,000 VND/kg to 20,000 VND/kg; Malabar spinach 6,000 - 7,000 VND/bunch; water spinach 6,000 VND/bunch, and passionflower 60,000 VND/kg...

Not only in Vinh city but also in the markets of Tan Ky, Quy Hop, Quy Chau districts, the prices of many types of vegetables have also increased sharply. Specifically, squash and pumpkin are 7,000 - 8,000 VND/kg; green vegetables are 8,000 VND/bunch, tomatoes are 30,000 VND/kg...

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa, a vegetable vendor at Quang Trung market (Vinh city) said: "At this time, the prices of all vegetables have increased and are expensive. Heavy rains cause flooding, reducing supply, not to mention this is the end of the season for many types of vegetables, so the supply is scarce."

Currently, to ensure enough goods for business, small traders mainly import vegetables from China such as cabbage, tomatoes, celery, radishes... Due to transportation costs and other expenses, the prices of some of these items are also pushed up.

Ms. Vo Thi Huong in Hung Dung Ward (Vinh City) said that a large family would spend 50,000 - 70,000 VND buying vegetables for the whole day. Therefore, I have to go to the market early to buy vegetables and tubers from people in the countryside, which are both cheap and can be stored longer, saving every penny is a good thing."

Many vegetable growing areas in Vinh city such as Nghi An, Nghi Lien, Quynh Luu... were damaged and crushed due to the rain that lasted for many days. Currently, people are going to the fields to restore production after the storm.
