(Baonghean.vn) - Some items with high demand such as fresh foods such as beef, fish, fruits... have increased in price by about 10-30%; green vegetables in particular have increased sharply compared to normal days.

Vegetable prices increase sharply

On the fourth day of Tet, the market gates in Nam Dan were bustling with buyers and sellers, mostly small traders selling various foods such as meat, fish and vegetables. Among them, the vegetable stalls were the most crowded and bustling with buyers.

By noon, most of the vegetable stalls at Sa Nam market were sold out, and those who came late to the market had to go home empty-handed because there were no more vegetables to buy. "At the beginning of the year, I picked vegetables from my garden, mainly mustard greens and Malabar spinach, to bring to the market for luck. But in just 30 minutes, all the vegetables were gone, and it was easy to sell them at a good price. Normally, 20 bunches of mustard greens would sell for 60,000 VND, but now they sell for 150,000 VND," Ms. Dinh Thi Lan happily said.

Green vegetables are "priced" 3 times higher than usual, especially hot pot vegetables such as celery, Malabar spinach, mustard greens, water spinach... 5 to 7 times more expensive but still very crowded with buyers. Photo: Thanh Phuc

Not only in district markets, prices of food in rural markets have increased slightly, especially green vegetables have increased sharply compared to the days before Tet. According to a survey at rural markets in Thanh Chuong, Anh Son, Nam Dan, Nghi Loc... green vegetables are "priced" twice or three times higher than usual. However, the supply is still not enough to meet people's needs. Ms. Phan Thi Ty, Hoa Son commune, Do Luong said: "Today, we organize a New Year's meal to send off our children to go back to the city to work, so the demand for green vegetables has increased."

In Vinh city, the prices of green vegetables have increased sharply, especially hot pot vegetables, which have increased 5-7 times compared to normal days. Specifically, each bunch of chrysanthemum costs 8,000 - 10,000 VND/bunch (5 times higher than normal days); celery costs 35,000 - 45,000 VND/bunch (25,000 - 35,000 VND/bunch higher than before Tet). Malabar spinach, perilla, mugwort, and enoki mushrooms have increased 3 times compared to normal days...

Although very expensive, green vegetables are consumed quite quickly and strongly.

The reason for the sudden increase in vegetable prices is because demand is many times higher than usual while supply is reduced. Photo: Thanh Phuc

According to the explanation of the traders, the reason why the price of green vegetables increased sharply after Tet is because the weather is cold and rainy, vegetables are difficult to grow; meanwhile, people are still celebrating Tet, have not returned to harvest and supply, so the amount of green vegetables is scarce while vegetables are difficult to stockpile. Second, after Tet, the demand for green vegetables increases when the Tet days are cold, people eat a lot of hot pot. Third, after Tet, business activities at the markets have not returned, so there are fewer sellers than buyers, so prices increase...

Stabilize the market after Tet

On the first day of Tet, families celebrated the New Year, so the shops were closed. On the second day of Tet, some shops reopened. In some markets, fresh food such as beef, pork and green vegetables were on sale.

In particular, prices of some green vegetables, food, fruits, and betel nuts remain high.

According to Mr. Tran Thanh Hai - Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade, before Tet, the Department of Industry and Trade issued Official Dispatch No. 1952/SCT-QLTM dated November 25, 2019 requesting to ensure the source of goods for the 2020 Lunar New Year, focusing on directing food distribution enterprises and markets in the province to coordinate with enterprises and concentrated livestock facilities to have plans to ensure the supply of pork and pork substitutes.

Goods for Tet this year are rich and diverse in design, and prices are relatively stable. During the Lunar New Year, supermarkets, convenience stores, shopping malls, goods distributors, and markets in the province have proactively developed plans to prepare goods for Tet and committed to an abundant supply, and prices of essential goods will remain stable on the days before or after Tet. Some distribution businesses in the province have also registered points of sale for essential goods for Tet.
