In recent years, Nghe An forestry sector has made a strong shift from exploiting natural forests to protecting, replanting, enriching forests and developing raw material forests towards sustainable development, contributing to making Nghe An one of the localities with the highest forest coverage in the country. From 2011 to present, the newly planted area has always reached over 15,000 hectares/year.

Nghe An's current planted forest area is over 191 thousand hectares, of which the area of raw wood plantation is 145,526 hectares. Annually, the exploited output reaches about 1,000,000m3/year. In 2015, Nghe An exported 115.9 million USD, accounting for more than 25% of the province's total export turnover. Currently, the province still has 166,745 hectares of unforested land under production forest planning. This is a great potential for developing wood material forests to serve the wood processing needs in the province.

Currently, in the province, there are many factories processing planted forest wood in operation and continuing to invest in new construction in industrial parks such as Nam Cam, Hoang Mai, Thanh Chuong, Anh Son, Nghia Dan... Along with that, the demand for wood for the production of other products such as: Wood for the production of handicrafts is about 7,000 m3/year, household wood about 10,000 m3/year, interior and exterior wood... about 110,000 m3/year, therefore, the demand for consumption of plantation wood materials increases.

According to calculations, the demand for raw materials from planted forests in the province in 2016 is 1.0 million m3; 2020 needs 1.7 million m3; 2.5 million m2 needed in 20253and by 2030 about 3.0 million m3, equivalent to the output of 20 thousand hectares of raw wood plantations/year.

To meet the demand for raw materials from planted forests for factories, Nghe An aims to have 210,614 hectares of raw material forests by 2020; and 257,490 hectares of raw material forests by 2025. By 2020, the export of products from planted forests is expected to reach 130 million USD (in 2020) and 170 million USD by 2025.
