(Baonghean.vn) - It is currently the busy corn harvest season in Tan Ky district (Nghe An). Taking advantage of the free days after the harvest, people here are trying to earn extra income by cutting corn for hire. In addition, driving and buying corn are also "hot" jobs here.

For the past 2 years, dairy and commercial cow breeding companies in Nghia Dan, Thai Hoa, Yen Thanh, and Dien Chau have been purchasing young corn at high prices, so many households have cooperated with these units to grow corn for supply.

Due to the large corn area and lack of labor, many families as well as corn buyers in Tan Ky have to hire a number of workers to harvest the corn.

These days, every early morning, many groups of farmers in Tan Ky district gather at intersections to wait for people to hire them to chop corn.

During this season in the corn fields of Tan Ky, groups of people carrying sickles, knives and drinking water stand at the intersections, crossroads or roads leading to the corn fields. Everyone is ready when someone needs to hire them to go to the fields.

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Cong, hamlet 9, Nghia Binh commune said: Each group of people who go to chop corn for hire has about 10 people, on hot days they go from 2-3 am, chop 10 tons and will be paid 1.5 million VND.

Ms. Hoang Thi Tho, also in Hamlet 9, added: each person earns at least 150,000 VND/session. If you work as a hired worker all day, you can earn 300,000 VND/day.

If it is grass corn (corn without ears), corn growers are paid from 180,000 - 200,000 VND/ton.

If it is meat corn (big ears, even grains), the field owner will be paid 1.5 million VND/ton. And those who are hired to cut the corn will receive from 150 - 300 thousand VND/day.

Besides the corn cutters, the driving profession has also become "hot" following the corn harvest season. Every day, dozens of trucks with a capacity of 7-8 tons go in and out of the corn fields. Depending on the distance, the driver will be paid a different price.

Driving a truck to transport corn for livestock companies is also becoming a "hot" job at this time in Tan Ky.

Mr. Nguyen Van Ha, a driver, said: each day he can only carry one trip. If he carries corn to the beef farm of Hoang Anh Gia Lai in Cam Xuyen district, Ha Tinh, he will be paid 300,000 VND/ton, and in a closer area like the TH dairy company in Nghia Dan, he will be paid 110,000 VND/ton. After deducting the cost of fuel, he will earn more than 500,000 VND/day.

Corn is purchased at the field for 700,000 VND/ton and imported to the dairy company for 950,000 to 1 million VND/ton.

It is known that Tan Ky has more than 2,000 hectares of fertile land along the river, with two corn harvests a year, each lasting about two months. This is an opportunity to earn extra income for people in the district as well as neighboring areas.
