Clean vegetable and spice growing profession in Cua Lo

Previously, on the garden land of Mrs. Hoang Thi Hoa in Dai Thong block, Nghi Thu ward, vegetables were mainly grown to serve the family's needs. Since Cua Lo became a town, her family has invested heavily in growing herbs such as basil, fish mint, coriander, perilla, Malabar spinach, and piper lolot leaves to sell to restaurants and hotels in the tourist area.
Ms. Hoang Thi Hoa, Dai Thong block, Nghi Thu ward, said: "My family grows herbs in the garden on an area of less than 1 sao, but each year we sell more than 30 million VND."
In addition to Ms. Hoa, Ms. Le Thi Canh's family (Dai Thong block) also grows nearly 600 square meters of herbs, and she also raises chickens for sale. Local residents said that every afternoon they cut vegetables to take to the specialty market in Cua Lo tomorrow. They harvest about 300 bunches of herbs a day, in addition to squash, cucumber, and other vegetables, they also earn from 150,000 to 200,000 VND a day, enough for family expenses.

Up to this point, the whole town has more than 100 households, mainly in Nghi Thu ward, investing in growing herbs for tourism with an area of nearly 8 hectares. According to the people, growing herbs has low initial costs and can be harvested all year round after planting once. Cua Lo tourism mainly takes place in the 3 summer months, so the temperature is often high at this time, vegetable growers have to pump water to irrigate the plants every day. Moreover, herbs supplied to restaurants must be fresh and clean, so harvesting takes place every day. Therefore, with 1 sao of growing herbs, several workers must be mobilized to take care of and harvest the vegetables.
Although it is hard work, according to the people, growing spices in Cua Lo also brings in an income of 400 to 500 million VND/ha/crop - a number 10 times higher than growing sesame and peanuts before.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Yen - Deputy Head of Economic Department - Cua Lo Town said: "The town's policy is to guide farmers to produce clean agricultural products for tourism. Particularly, the spice vegetable product brings high economic value, so we are directing the wards to expand the area of this crop. At the same time, we are directing relevant departments to help people with techniques for planting and caring for vegetables to both increase income and promote agricultural development.
Spice vegetables in Cua Lo are grown on sandy soil and watered with clean water, so they have a fragrant and attractive flavor.
