US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said today there is a "real chance" that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will reach a deal with US President Donald Trump at their upcoming summit. However, North Korea will have to accept "irreversible" steps to end its nuclear weapons program in any deal with the US,Reutersreport
"We use the word 'irreversible' in a very important sense. We will demand steps that show that denuclearization can be achieved. Mr. Kim is willing to discuss President Trump's request, as well as set a roadmap for us to achieve that goal," he said.Secretary Pompeo announced.
Mr. Pompeo's assessment is likely to bring hope for a breakthrough, helping bring peace to the Korean peninsula after the historic summit between the North Korean leader and South Korean President Moon Jae-in on April 27.
The US Secretary of State affirmed that Mr. Trump will demand Mr. Kim's commitment to achieving the goal of denuclearization, saying that Washington is ready to take appropriate actions, but did not disclose details.
However, Mr. Pompeo also warned that "there is still a lot of work to do," saying that Pyongyang has repeatedly broken its promises and President Trump will maintain tough sanctions until North Korea ends its nuclear weapons program.
The US president and North Korean leader are expected to hold a summit in late May or June. Mr. Trump said he has narrowed the location of the meeting to two, with sources quoting some US officials as saying that Singapore is the top choice to host the event.
