Mirror reported yesterday that an anonymous Filipino fishermanfound a 34 kg pearl 10 years ago in the waters off Palawan Island andkept in the house for luck without knowing its value.
A fire at his home earlier this year forced him to relocate and take the pearl to the local tourism office in Puerto Princesa. Officials there confirmed it was a giant clam, potentially worth as much as $100 million.
The pearl is 0.3 meters wide and 0.7 meters long, five times larger than the world record-holding Allah Pearl, which weighs 6.4 kg and is worth 35 million USD, found in Palawan, Philippines, in 1934.
Aileen Cynthia Amurao, a tourism officer, said the fisherman found the pearl while diving to unhook an anchor stuck in a rock.
"We were amazed when the fisherman brought the pearl. We are looking for gemologists to help certify it and are waiting for verification from the Pearl Research Institute and other international organizations. But we are sure that this is the world's largest natural pearl, born from a giant clam. We will keep it in the Philippines to attract tourists to visit the city," Amurao said.
