Nguyen Dinh Mau, his wife and two sons (top row) were brought to court for trial. |
The trial showed that Nguyen Dinh Mau's family and Nguyen Quang Loi's family (born in 1964, neighbor) had had persistent conflicts. On May 15, 2014, when Nguyen Dinh Quy (who was on military service) returned home on leave, Tuat told his son that Loi and his father were bullying him at home.
That same evening, after returning from the wedding, Quy and his mother went to Loi's house to curse and throw bricks into the neighbor's yard. However, because Loi's family did not react and called the police, Quy and his mother had no choice but to leave.
Not satisfied with causing trouble at Mr. Loi's house, Tuat continued to tell his son about how some people in Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hop's family (Mr. Loi's mother) had also joined Loi and his father in bullying him while Quy was away. In retaliation, Tuat once again called his son to Mrs. Hop's house to cause trouble.
Here, the belligerent woman threw provocative words at her teenage son. Afterwards, Tuat picked up bricks and threw them inside, and did not hesitate to curse Mrs. Hop’s family and children.
Meanwhile, hearing that Tuat and his mother were going to his father-in-law's house to cause trouble, Nguyen Xuan Trong immediately ran to Mr. Loi's house. At the same time, Nguyen Quang Loc, Nguyen Quang Toan (Loi's son and nephew), and Nguyen Van Chinh (Hop's son) also prepared weapons and gathered.
Facing Quy's mother and son on the dike (in front of Mrs. Hop's family gate), the four brothers, uncle and nephew of Chinh, both cursed at each other and attacked, forcing Tuat and his son to run home.
Arriving at his house gate, Tuat saw Mau still leisurely sitting and playing with two neighbors, so he provoked her husband: "Are you just sitting there? Let those two guys chase you, if you slip a little, you'll die." Immediately, Mau ordered Nguyen Dinh Duong (the suspect's eldest son) to go into the house and get a machete.
On the way to the dike to fight with Loi's children and grandchildren, Mau sent Duong home because his eldest son was not in good health. Facing the opponent, Mau ignored the crowd and grabbed a machete and rushed in to fight with Chinh's group.
And then, during the fight, Mr. Chinh was slashed many times by Mau, including across the neck, leading to his death. Knowing that he had slashed someone to death, Mau quickly ran home to hide the weapon. After fleeing for a while, on May 18, 2014, the subject who killed his neighbor because of his wife's provocative words turned himself in.
In court, Mau, his wife and two sons did not fully confess their crimes as stated in the indictment, but the first instance jury still had sufficient grounds to convict the defendants of the corresponding crimes. Regarding the three subjects, Mr. Loi's children and grandchildren, the Hanoi Court also affirmed that the defendants had committed acts that were dangerous to society.
Finally, with the assessment that the act of hacking Mr. Chinh to death was particularly serious and clearly demonstrated hooliganism and brutality, the Hanoi People's Court decided to sentence Nguyen Dinh Mau to life in prison for the crime of "Murder", according to the framework of the indictment.
For the defendants who committed the crime of “Disturbing public order”, the first instance court sentenced them to between 14 and 24 months in prison. As for Nguyen Dinh Duong, due to the seriousness of his crime, the Hanoi Court only sentenced him to 14 months in prison, with a suspended sentence.
