Citizens' proposals will be considered in case of a situation of renaming the peninsula: add the word "Taurida" to the name "Republic of Crimea".
Crimea's permanent representative Georgy Muradov said that this is not a renaming of the region, but an extension of the peninsula's name.
Previously, Mr. Muradov did not rule out the possibility of using the second name of the Republic of Crimea, Taurida. Explaining this choice, the permanent representative of Crimea said that the word "Taurida" was proposed by the Crimean community of Greek origin.
Experts note that the use of the name Taurida requires a comprehensive referendum, in order to comply with the interests of all regions and areas of the Crimean Peninsula.
Taurida- one of the historical names of the Crimean Peninsula in ancient and medieval times, and was used after its annexation to the Russian Federation in 1783.
During the Russian Empire, Taurida was the name of a province.
On March 21, 1918, on the territory of Crimea, the Taurida Socialist Republic was proclaimed, and maintained its name until April 30, 1918.
The Republic of Crimea and the Federal City of Sevastopol are two entities constituting the Crimean Peninsula Region.
"The Greek community of Crimea has proposed to add the name of the republic. Whether the prefix appears in quotation marks or separated by a hyphen, or in any other way, it needs public support. If the majority of the public does not support it, the Crimean authorities will not be able to implement it," Muradov stressed.
"Crimea is the 2000-year-old historical name of the peninsula. The historical name Taurida is now used as a symbol, as the name of the new highway running through the entire peninsula, and as one of the largest youth forums of Crimea" - the Permanent Representative of Crimea explained.
