Man stabs village chief to death, sentenced to 19 years in prison
(Baonghean.vn) - After an argument over a broken drain, Mr. Nhung took a knife and stabbed a village official, killing him.
On the morning of July 24, Nghe An Provincial People's Court opened the first instance trial of Nguyen Van Nhung (born 1952, residing in Dien Nguyen commune, Dien Chau district) for murder.
According to the indictment, in front of the gate of Mr. Nguyen Van Nhung's family in Hamlet 3 (Dien Nguyen Commune), there is an irrigation ditch. During the water supply and drainage process, a tree stump got stuck, preventing water from flowing through.

On the evening of March 5, 2018, Mr. Nguyen Van Thang (born in 1960) - the head of hamlet 3, residing at the same address, came to Mr. Nhung's family to discuss removing the tree stump from the ditch and the family agreed.
The next morning (March 6), Mr. Thang brought an excavator to Mr. Nhung’s ditch to remove the tree stump. During the construction process, the sewer broke, so Mr. Nhung had to use some wooden planks to cross the ditch to make a path for his family. That afternoon, Mr. Nhung went to Mr. Thang’s house to ask, “Why did you dig it out? You dug it out, so what are you going to do now?” In response, Mr. Thang said, “You dug out the ditch to drain the water, to clear it so that the water can flow. And the ditch was blocked, so we had to dig it out collectively.”
The two sides continued to argue until a neighbor intervened, and Mr. Nhung went home. However, because he was upset, Mr. Nhung immediately took a 34 cm long knife and returned to Mr. Thang's gate to call the homeowner out to resolve the matter.
When Mr. Thang was walking out of the house with a pipe, Mr. Nhung stabbed him in the chest with a knife. Although he was taken to the emergency room, the victim died that same day.
After committing the crime, suspect Nhung went to the police station to confess his actions.
At court today, defendant Nguyen Van Nhung admitted his crime and asked the court to reduce his sentence.
Considering the aggravating and mitigating circumstances, the panel sentenced defendant Nhung to 19 years in prison; and ordered her to pay a total of more than 180 million VND in civil compensation to the victim’s family (30 million VND has been paid)…
