Rice farmers 'make money' from making metal barrels

Previously, people mainly used wooden crates and bamboo mats to store rice, which were often damaged by rats, but now they have been replaced by metal barrels. Each set of metal barrels is from 1.7m to 2.2m high, and can hold 8-10 quintals of rice. Metal barrels are convenient, have reasonable prices, and are gradually becoming a favorite item of farmers. That is why the metal barrel making profession in Vien Thanh commune - Yen Thanh is thriving.

Mr. Nguyen Huu Nhan - Chairman of the People's Committee of Vien Thanh Commune, Yen Thanh said: The profession of making metal rice containers in Vien Thanh Commune has existed for about 10 years now, households have learned this profession from the Northern provinces and from some of the original families, the profession is now creating jobs for more than 100 workers, in addition there are nearly 100 workers specializing in trading products.

To make a set of metal bins for storing rice, the workers have to go through many stages: Cutting the metal into rings, inserting steel, pressing the metal rings to make them strong, assembling the metal rings into a bin, making the bottom, the lid and the door. The workers used steel inserting machines and rim pressing machines, contributing to increased labor productivity.

Every year, households engaged in the profession of making corrugated iron boxes in Vien Thanh and Yen Thanh produce about 40,000 sets of boxes. Due to the high demand, Vien Thanh commune is encouraging households to expand their scale, both creating stable jobs for local workers and contributing to the economic restructuring in agricultural areas.

The products are of high quality and high value, so they are transported to all districts in Nghe An and also to Thanh Hoa, Ha Tinh provinces and even to Laos.

Each metal crate costs from 400,000 to 500,000 VND. After deducting expenses, the profit is about 50,000 to 70,000 VND depending on the selling price to customers. Households doing the job said they earn from 150 to 200 million VND per year./.
