Samira Lamrani, who witnessed the whole incident, said that while the fire engulfed the Grenfell Tower apartment building in White City, London, she saw a woman trying to save her child by dropping the baby from the 9th or 10th floor of the building onto the street for people standing below to catch, according to the Guardian.
"People started to look at the windows when they heard banging and screaming. The window was open and a woman signaled that she was going to throw her baby and wanted someone to catch it," Lamrani said. "A man did. He ran over and caught the baby."
"I could see many victims crying and screaming for help on all floors," Lamrani said. "We reassured them, told them we did everything we could and called 999. But the fear was still evident on their faces."
"The higher I looked, the more people I saw, mostly children," Lamrani said. "I could hear them screaming for help. That will probably haunt me for a long time."
Another resident, Zara, said she also saw a woman throw a boy, about 5 years old, from the 5th or 6th floor of the apartment building to help him escape the fire. "I think he's okay," Zara said. "He probably just has bruises or broken bones."
The Grenfell Tower fire broke out early this morning. Firefighters were first notified at around 1:16 a.m. London police confirmed at least six people had died in the incident, adding that the toll could rise.
Many witnesses said the building's fire suppression system was completely inoperable, according to CNN. Residents were even advised to stay indoors in case of a fire.
