Foreigner impersonating police officer defrauded 10 billion VND
Pan Chu Lin, 23 years old, and his accomplices pretended to be police officers, prosecutors... called 18 people to threaten, trick them into transferring money, and then embezzled more than 10 billion VND.
Pan Chu Lin and two Taiwanese compatriots, Chiu Po Sung and Hou Po Ta, were sentenced to 10-15 years in prison by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Court for the crime ofFraudulent appropriation of property, cafternoon 11/19
They were assisted by 7 Vietnamese people, sentenced to 5-12 years in prison. All defendants must compensate the victims for the money they stole.

They threatened to arrest them if they did not prove their "innocence" by transferring all the money to the account of the "investigative agency". After the police determined that the money was not related to a crime, they would return it. Out of fear, the victims followed the instructions.
Once the money was in the account, Lin's accomplice withdrew it all.
In court, the defendants admitted their actions. Some said they only withdrew money for Lin's group, not knowing it was a scam.
In his final words, Lin apologized to the victims when he learned that they were old and had their entire fortune stolen. However, the defendant said that the actual amount of money he had stolen was not much and that he was currently unable to recover it because he could not contact his family.
