Woman gets bitter ending when borrowing gold to trade drugs
(Baonghean.vn) - Having no money, Vi Thi Phuong took 2 taels of gold her sister had sent her to "mortgage" to a drug dealer. However, before she could sell the drugs, Phuong was arrested by the Ky Son District Police.
On August 28, the Provincial People's Court opened a first-instance criminal trial of Vi Thi Phuong (born 1981), residing in Luong Minh commune, Tuong Duong, for the crime of "Illegal drug trafficking".

During the investigation, questioning, and public debate at the trial, Vi Thi Phuong's criminal behavior was clarified as follows: At noon on April 4, a man named Binh called to order drugs from Phuong. In the afternoon of the same day, Phuong went to the Ho hill area (Dua village, Luong Minh) to buy drugs from 3 Lao people. These Lao people agreed to sell Phuong 1 heroin stick for 18 million VND and 2 packages of pink phien for 14 million VND. Because she did not have money to pay immediately, Phuong suggested "mortgaging" the 2-tael gold ring that her sister had asked her to keep (worth 8 million VND), the remaining debt would be paid when all the goods were sold and the 3 Lao people agreed.
Phuong brought the drugs home and hid them by the stream next to her house. On the morning of April 5, Binh called Phuong to arrange for her to bring the drugs to the cemetery of Dua village for delivery. While the two were delivering the goods, they were caught red-handed by the Ky Son District Police. The man named Binh escaped, and Phuong was arrested. Because Phuong was raising a child under 36 months old, she was released on bail.
At the trial, the defendant admitted all his crimes and hoped to receive leniency from the law so he could soon return to raise his children.
Considering the case as a whole, the panel sentenced Vi Thi Phuong to 15 years in prison.
