Vietnamese people are wasteful: only need to be stylish, ignore usefulness

Many Vietnamese consumers have wasted a lot of money chasing after new products with many modern features, but after buying them, they rarely use them.

This is the general comment of market experts when studying the purchasing and usage habits of Vietnamese people's household products.

Smart TV please: 3D, 4K is a waste

The most specific example is with television. Nowadays, television manufacturers have launched a series of Smart TV models that integrate many new modern features such as 3D, internet connection, smart share, gaming...

When choosing to buy a TV, many customers like and choose to buy these TVs. However, after buying them, they use them like a normal TV and every day they only know how to change channels or increase or decrease the volume without using all of its new features.

Many families, when asked, said that most of the smart TVs they bought were mainly used to watch news programs and movies from TV stations. The 3D feature was initially still used. However, having to use glasses, along with the lack of rich content, the desire gradually decreased. Some customers said that they only watched when there was a new movie, or on weekends. Many people admitted that after only half a year, this function was almost never used, except when guests came to visit and showed them to "resolve the problem of prestige".

The same goes for 2D to 3D conversion. This feature is used to convert all 2D input sources into 3D to create 3D sources. However, the image is considered unrealistic, and requires glasses, so few people use it.

The feature, Smart Share can connect, share data wirelessly with computers, tablets or smartphones, used to transfer images, music or movies from phones, computers, tablets to TVs and vice versa. When asked, many families admitted that they have never used this feature. Most of the people who use this feature are technology enthusiasts. Similarly, the gaming feature is also used by very few families regularly.

Perhaps the most used feature is connecting the TV to the internet to watch online movie stores. With a large number of HD movies updated regularly, providing high image quality that many people love, it can replace boring TV shows. However, accessing the internet to watch other content and programs is very limited because it is a smart TV but still cannot be compared to a laptop, because the control is very difficult.

Currently, the price of a TV with full 3D, internet, smart share functions... is from 20 million VND or more, while if you only buy a 2D TV with internet connection function, the price is only half and is considered more effective, after a while you can change to a new TV.

However, many people still do not like such a TV because it is considered unclassy and unfashionable, and they are willing to waste tens of millions of dong on features that are rarely used.

Buying a car: Buy a big car regardless of your needs

The same goes for cars, many Vietnamese people have wasted hundreds of millions of dong buying cars that are not suitable for their purposes and conditions of use. There are many people who buy large SUVs mainly to take their children to school or work in the city instead of choosing a compact, fuel-efficient car model.

Many auto companies have been "shocked" about Vietnamese customers when they see that they have little money but do not buy cheap cars. Cheap cars are often just for viewing, but when it comes to buying, consumers tend to choose expensive cars.

For example, when launching the new Camry 2012 model, Toyota Vietnam added the 2.0 E version and set high expectations for this low-cost version. However, after more than a year of sales, consumers bought the most expensive version, the 2.5G, followed by the 2.5V, and the worst-selling version was the 2.0E. Similarly, the small car Ford Fiesta has 3 versions, of which the cheapest version with the most anticipated 1.4 L engine was the worst-selling and was soon discontinued. On the contrary, customers only liked the most premium version, the sport, with a 1.6L engine and 6-speed automatic transmission, even though it cost tens of millions of VND more.

Not only that, many customers really like imported cars because they have many modern features, even though they don't know if they are suitable for Vietnam. For example, lane departure warning technology. For the US and European markets, this device is considered very useful. This warning system will use a camera to detect white or yellow lane dividers. If the car runs over these dividers without signaling, the system will emit a warning sound to the driver. With urban traffic conditions like in Vietnam, driving in crowded neighborhoods with frequent traffic jams, perhaps the warning device is not suitable, but many people still like to have it on their cars.

Same with motorbikes. In 2013, there were many new motorbikes launched in Vietnam with quite good prices. However, many consumers still did not choose domestic motorbikes but imported motorbikes, even imported used motorbikes with much higher prices.

This spending habit is not only found in the wealthy, but is also very common among those with tight budgets. Many Vietnamese consumers are rushing to "throw money out the window" without any regret.

Is this a big waste?
