According to the defendant's testimony, around mid-May 2019, Denh Song Cho went to the Nam Can border market and met a Laotian man named Xong Xeng. On June 13, 2019, Xong Xeng called Cho to help him bring 12 kg of crystal meth to sell to a man named Tuan in Vinh City for 160 thousand USD. If successful, Cho would be paid 5,000 USD. His family was already poor and was raising a small child, so upon hearing that, Cho immediately agreed to go.
At around 3 p.m. that same day, as arranged by Xeng, Cho and Tuan met at the square. Cho told Tuan that Xong Xeng asked Cho to deliver the goods and collect the money. Tuan said: "Then go home, contact us later."
Immediately after that, Cho called Xeng, who told him to just drive back to Thanh Thuy commune, Thanh Chuong district and wait until he had the drugs, Xeng would call him to deliver them to Tuan.
On June 14, 2019, Xeng called Cho and told him to follow the trail into Khe Mu until he was close to the Vietnam-Laos border and someone would deliver the goods. After about 3 km, Cho met 2 Lao men who gave Cho a purple backpack and said: "There are 12 packages of crystal meth inside. Give them to Tuan and take back 160 thousand USD."
Arriving at Thanh Thuy commune, discovering that Cho had many suspicious signs, the authorities conducted a search and seized 12 packages of white crystals suspected to be drugs. Through examination, it was clear that the amount of white powder that Cho was carrying with him was methaphetamine with a mass of 12,185.46 grams.
Denh Song Cho has 3 children, the youngest is not yet 1 year old. At the trial, Cho's wife came down carrying her baby with her in the hope that her father would see her face one more time.
The panel of judges determined that the amount of drugs Cho bought and sold was too large, causing a very serious impact on social life, so there needed to be very strict punishment measures. However, considering that Cho was an ethnic minority and had not finished secondary school, his awareness was still poor. The panel of judges decided to sentence Cho to death for the crime of "Illegal drug trafficking".
