Former Vice President: "Let's do something for our children!"

I met Ms. Binh (former Vice President Nguyen Thi Binh - PV) when she retired, in 2015. The first time, I talked with her for about 2 hours.

For personal reasons, I did not ask her to record the conversation, so the story below is based entirely on my memory.

I said I was going to meet her to chat, but actually I talked more than listened, because she asked and I answered.

In that talk, it was all about education, including a topic about social ethics and school ethics.

Ms. Binh, after talking about the media reflections on the dark corners of education, she exclaimed: “Something must be done!”

Many actions of teachers, parents and students have damaged the image of the country’s education, which no citizen wants to mention again! Are these just flaws, “one bad apple spoils the barrel”… or have they really become “everyday occurrences”? I still hope that the dark spots in education are just isolated cases and can be overcome as soon as possible, in which each party needs to take responsibility.

First, communicationIt cannot be the cause of bad events, but the media can lead events in a positive or negative direction, which is true, especially when today with the development of technology, there is interaction. More constructive comments on events, together explaining the causes, finding ways to solve them are always necessary comments to solve the problem. I say this so that the press can control the words in the comments well, requiring those who give comments to have a constructive consciousness and a constructive culture. If this is done well, I am sure that educational managers and violators will soon realize their mistakes, even if there is no chance to correct them.

Monday, parents, society and especially studentsexpectations of teacherstoo much, even more than what teachers can do. This expectation is both an honor and a pressure for teachers. I think that, in modern education, teachers are only the ones who organize students to seek knowledge, form skills and attitudes towards their current and future lives. Teachers are the ones who accompany students to prepare for the future.

Currently, labor in the education sector, especially the labor of teachers, is a type of hard labor. A research group's announcement shows that teachers' working hours are 30% to 70% higher than the law. That is a great pressure.

Most urban classrooms are overcrowded. Having too many students in a class makes it difficult to apply theories and teaching methods to the classroom, such as individualizing teaching. Most of the violations in teachers' behavior towards students occur in large classes, especially in classes with many students with strong personalities.

However, I still have to open a parenthesis to emphasize that I do not support any anti-educational behavior of teachers towards students. Teachers need to know how to restrain themselves, even sacrifice themselves for their students - that is one of the top qualities of teachers.

Third, for students, I think that they all know their rights in the classroom and need to fully exercise those rights (and benefits). They have the right to demand more from their teachers, but in return, they also have to be responsible for themselves: Study better, strive to do better to become useful citizens in the future.

Every time you do something wrong, you must question yourself and your friends must have an attitude of not agreeing with your friends' mistakes, helping each other progress, building a strong, close-knit, loving group.

Fourth, parents and societyWe also need to take responsibility for developing education by working with teachers and schools to teach our children to become good people: capable of solving their current and future lives, and responsible to their parents and the community. Be calm and have a positive attitude to eliminate bad behaviors in the family, school and community. Schools alone cannot prepare all of our future citizens to enter life - that must be a shared responsibility.

"Let's do something for our children!"

I want to use Ms. Nguyen Thi Binh's words to call on everyone to join hands to bring our children to a brighter future!

Need to establish new value standards

The recent phenomena, though not widespread, have partly revealed a dark side. If not promptly remedied, it will be a danger to the education sector in particular and society in general.

Looking at the surface of the phenomenon, everyone sees that the cause is caused by specific people in specific places called students, teachers, and parents. They throw darkness into education, making true educators and the whole society shocked, bewildered, angry, ...

Why do they have such inhumane, even inhumane actions? Of course, they are the ones responsible. But what does the education sector think when the ones who throw darkness at them are their own products yesterday and today?

What should be done to promptly prevent this situation? This question must be asked simultaneously by each individual, each family, the education sector, the political system and the entire society.

Life has been and is undergoing an inevitable shift in values. Accordingly, there are also concepts, perceptions, and actions that are somewhat different from tradition. The education sector needs to summarize through practice, thereby establishing new value standards on the basis of inheritance to guide and monitor educational behaviors inside and outside of school.

Everyone knows that education is the backbone of society. Victory or defeat is here. Vietnamese education has been struggling to overcome many dark areas, including school violence, to step into the light. It really needs responsible voices.
