Yonhap reported on January 9 that speaking at the Workers' Party Congress, leader Kim Jong-un called the United States North Korea's "biggest enemy" and warned that he would continue to push forward with the nuclear program. "Our political and diplomatic activities should be focused and redirected to conquering the United States, our biggest enemy and the main obstacle to our innovative development," Kim said.
Kim Jong-un also said that Washington's hostile policy towards Pyongyang will not change no matter who occupies the White House. On the other hand, he stressed that ending hostility is the key to improving bilateral relations between the US and North Korea in the future.
The comments came after the US Congress officially confirmed Democratic candidate Joe Biden as the US President. Relations between the US and North Korea have shown signs of improvement under US President Donald Trump. Mr. Trump and Mr. Kim Jong-un have held summits on denuclearization on the Korean peninsula. However, these negotiations have so far been deadlocked due to the refusal of both sides to make concessions. During the election campaign, Mr. Biden announced his willingness to meet the North Korean leader to promote these negotiations.
