US diplomat arrested for accepting bribes from Chinese intelligence

On March 29, an American diplomat was accused of receiving tens of thousands of dollars in cash and gifts from Chinese intelligence agents.

According to AFP, this person has been charged with lying to investigators about these contacts.

The Justice Department said Candace Marie Claiborne, 60, knew that two Chinese men she had frequent contact with while working for the State Department in China and other countries were from Chinese security agencies and that the money they gave her was in exchange for US secrets.

“Ms. Claiborne used her position and access to sensitive diplomatic data for personal gain,” Acting Assistant Attorney General Mary McCord said in a statement.

According to the Justice Department, Ms. Claiborne was arrested on March 28 but declared her innocence when she first appeared in court on March 29. Ms. Claiborne has worked for the US State Department since 1999./.
