(Baonghean.vn) - This summer-autumn crop, Thanh Chuong district expanded the green bean production area to 2,000 hectares. This is because this is a crop that is drought-resistant, has high productivity and economic value; bringing a good income to farmers.

This Summer-Autumn crop, in addition to her family's 3 sao of land, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hanh in Linh Truong village, Thanh Linh commune also bid and borrowed land from the commune and some households to grow mung beans. Thanks to the application of techniques, from seed selection to proper care, after just over 2 months, the mung beans were ready to harvest.

Ms. Hanh said: “This year, due to the drought, other crops failed, but the green bean crop is the opposite. This bean plot will yield 4-5 harvests, with an estimated yield of about 50 kg/sao. The selling price at this time is 35,000 VND/kg, with more than 4 sao of beans, my family earns over 7 million VND, twice as much as growing rice.”

Nông dân Thanh Chương trồng các loại đậu xanh truyền thống và đậu xanh giống DX 208 - các loại giống đã được lai tạo phù hợp với thời tiết của vụ hè thu.
Thanh Chuong farmers grow traditional green beans and DX 208 green beans - varieties that have been crossbred to suit the weather of the summer-autumn crop.

Mr. Tran Van Lam's family in Lien Tan village, Thanh Lien commune also has 3 sao of green beans that are currently yielding their first harvest. Thanks to growing beans on moist alluvial soil near the river, the yield is high." Mr. Lam happily said: "For the past 4 years, after the winter-spring crop, my family has switched to growing green beans. This is the most reliable crop in the summer-autumn crop."

According to Mr. Nguyen Hoai Anh - Vice Chairman of Thanh Linh Commune People's Committee: Previously, most of the local fertile land was often used to grow corn, which did not bring high income. This year, due to unusual drought, many corn growing areas have been converted to green beans (which are more drought-resistant and also bring higher income). Immediately after harvesting the winter-spring rice crop, people planted green beans, with an area of about 60 hectares.

Despite the severe drought, green bean plants in Thanh Chuong district still yield high yields (reaching 8 quintals/ha).

In the harsh drought conditions, other crops such as corn and rice grow poorly, but green beans have outstanding advantages, suitable for the summer-autumn crop. Therefore, in recent years, Thanh Chuong has reduced the corn growing area and focused on expanding the green bean growing area.

Except for some areas that are too dry to be planted, the remaining alluvial land and land with irrigation conditions have been planted with green beans and soybeans. This summer-autumn crop, the district's green bean area has been expanded, increasing from nearly 1,000 hectares (in 2015) to nearly 2,000 hectares; concentrated in the communes of Thanh Linh, Thanh Lien, Ngoc Son, Thanh Giang ...

After harvesting, the beans are dried thoroughly to remove the shell.

In communes with adequate irrigation water, green bean yields can reach 800 kg/ha. It is estimated that this summer-autumn crop, the entire district can harvest about 1,300 tons of beans.

From these results, Thanh Chuong district is planning to encourage people in some areas to convert the entire area of land used for growing crops to green beans and other vegetables that can withstand harsh weather conditions in the summer-autumn crop to increase people's income.
