(Baonghean.vn) - Hired by two Lao people to transport nearly 7 kg of drugs for a salary of 500 USD, Denh Ba Lia (residing in Ky Son, Nghe An) accepted the job. While Lia was transporting a sack of drugs to deliver to the buyer, he was arrested by the police.

On November 23, Nghe An Provincial People's Court opened a first-instance criminal trial of defendant Denh Ba Lia (born 1986), residing in Huoi Poc village, Nam Can commune, Ky Son district, for the crime of "Illegally transporting narcotics".

The case file shows that at around 4:00 p.m. on July 30, 2020, Denh Ba Lia was returning from work on the farm near the Vietnam-Laos border area in Nam Can commune when he met two men who introduced themselves as Laotians.

After talking, two Lao people hired Lia to transport 7 packages of drugs to the inter-commune road in Noong De village, Nam Can commune for 500 USD. Lia agreed.

Two Laotians gave Lia a sack containing 7 packages of drugs and 500 USD. Lia gave the two Laotians her phone number and then carried the drugs home and hid them in the kitchen.

At 8pm on July 31, the Lao called Lia and said: “The drug recipient has arrived, bring the drugs to them” and gave Lia the phone number of the drug recipient. Lia then called the drug recipient but the other party did not answer.

That same evening, Lia put the sack containing drugs on the front of his motorbike and delivered them to a customer. At 9:45 p.m., while Lia was on the road in Noong De village, Nam Can commune, he was arrested by the police. The evidence of the case was 5 packages of drugs weighing 4,994 grams and 2 packages of crystal meth weighing 2,003 grams.

At the trial, the defendant admitted to the crime. Defendant Lia stated that he transported drugs for hire in exchange for 500 USD. Regarding the amount of money he received, the defendant stated that he had paid off all his debts. Facing the highest sentence under the law, defendant Lia asked for a chance to live.

Considering that in this case, the defendant illegally transported a particularly large quantity of drugs. Therefore, a severe sentence is needed to demonstrate the severity of the law and to have a general deterrent and preventive effect.

Considering the case comprehensively, the panel sentenced Denh Ba Lia to death for the crime of "Illegal transportation of narcotics".
