Russia's RIA news agency quoted Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova as saying today that all Russian Embassy staff in Yemen have left the country due to the unstable situation in the capital Sanaa.
Saudi Arabia's state news agency also reported that a Russian plane evacuated embassy staff and some Russian citizens from Sanaa early this morning (local time).
According to the news agency, the Saudi-led military coalition fighting the Houthi group in Yemen has also received a request to allow Russian planes to evacuate its citizens. According to some sources, the Russian Ambassador to Yemen and some diplomatic staff will work temporarily in Saudi Arabia.
The Saudi-led coalition is intensifying airstrikes in Yemen, while the Houthi rebels tighten their control over the capital Sanaa after killing former President Ali Abdullah Saleh. Concerned about the increasing violence in Yemen, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for a “new effort” to end the war in Yemen, while expressing hope that the US can put pressure on Saudi Arabia to help resolve the humanitarian crisis in this Middle Eastern country./.
