Japanese television stations said special law enforcement teams of about 40 people will patrol the streets from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The special security teams were set up after a number of incidents involving U.S. military personnel.

A curfew for US military personnel at the Okinawa base has also been imposed by commanders there from May 27 to June 24 - a month after a US veteran named Kenneth Franklin was arrested on suspicion of stabbing and killing a 20-year-old Japanese woman near the base. Franklin later admitted to the murder.

Following the incident, an American service member at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa was also injured when he was hit by two drunk drivers.

On Monday, the US military command in Japan also issued a temporary ban on alcohol consumption and travel restrictions for US Navy personnel in the country.

NHK also said the number of police officers working in Okinawa is expected to increase in the near future.
