Speaking at a press conference after talks with his Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister Abe said: "On the East Sea issue, the two countries share serious concerns about unilateral actions that increase tensions, such as large-scale island reclamation, construction of facilities and militarization. It is an important achievement that we agreed to cooperate to ensure safe, free and rule-based seas."
The East Sea is a place witnessing sovereignty disputes between many countries in the region, in which China is the country that illegally claims sovereignty over 80% of the area. This is an area where maritime transactions worth about 5 billion USD take place each year.
Prime Minister Abe's remarks came just days before the Group of Seven (G7) summit this weekend, where maritime security, terrorism and the global economy will be high on the agenda./.
