This is not the first time lost money has been found in a landfill in Japan, although this time the amount is unusually large.

According to Telegraph, the 63-year-old man, whose identity was not revealed, said he picked up a dream amount of money for many people, at a waste treatment plant in Numata town.

Police received a report from the man and are treating it as a case of lost property, Japanese newspaper Mainichi reported.

The local authorities have now released information about the incident, calling on any residents who think they have lost money to come to the police station to report. Details of the container containing the "huge" amount of money have not been revealed, to avoid the possibility of an impersonator coming to claim it.

Finding money in garbage plants is not uncommon in Japan.

In late 2012, an amount of money amounting to 10 million yen (about 2 billion VND) was crushed by machines in a waste treatment plant in Hiroshima.

Police later recovered 2,300 pieces of banknotes and concluded that the money was hidden in household items and the owner had forgotten about it.

A few years ago, employees of a garbage plant in Gifu Prefecture, Japan also found 6.85 million yen in deliberately torn bills and coins.

Under Japanese law, anyone who finds the money and turns it in to the police will be entitled to 5% to 20% of the total amount found, if the owner comes to claim it.

In the event that no one comes forward within three months, the finder will keep the entire amount.
