Mrs. Nguyen Thi Thinh, Noi village, Bac Thanh commune, tries to salvage the corn crop after it was flooded. |
Mrs. Nguyen Thi Thinh's family in Noi village, Bac Thanh commune, grew nearly 2 sao of corn on 2-rice land, of which nearly 1 sao was submerged in water for 2 consecutive days. After the water receded, the corn leaves turned yellow, the plants fell over, she tried to salvage the situation by re-establishing the corn plants, pulling out all the weeds, loosening the soil, and dissolving fertilizer in water for watering.
Mr. Tran Danh Luong - Chairman of Bac Thanh Commune People's Committee said: In the recent flood, the locality had more than 30 hectares of corn and 9 hectares of sweet potatoes submerged. After the water receded, the commune inspected and counted the damage, and found that the entire corn and sweet potato area could be restored, so the commune encouraged people to actively take care of them according to the instructions of the professional agency.
The family of Mrs. Nguyen Thi Danh, Kim Thanh hamlet, Hung Thanh commune has 12 meters of sweet potatoes that were also flooded. Now the family takes care of them by turning the soil on the beds and adding potassium fertilizer to the roots. |
This winter, the continuous rains have made it difficult to plant crops, especially corn on the two-crop rice land in Yen Thanh district. Up to now, the whole district has only planted 1,800 hectares, of which 1,300 hectares are corn, the rest are vegetables of all kinds, reaching 60% of the plan. The recent floods have completely lost 140 hectares of corn and 70 hectares of vegetables, 63 hectares of corn and 22 hectares of vegetables were affected.
Mr. Nguyen Van Duong - Head of the District Agriculture Department said: Immediately after the rain stopped and the water receded, the District People's Committee directed localities to propagate and guide farmers to recover winter crops. For fallen corn plants, people rebuilt them and took care of them by weeding, loosening the soil, and using urine mixed with phosphate fertilizer to irrigate the roots, stimulating root development; for areas of corn and vegetables that were completely lost, people re-cultivated the land to grow vegetables, not continuing to grow corn because of the late season.

According to the recommendations of the Department of Agriculture, for the corn area after the flood, rebuild, plow and care according to the instructions of the agricultural extension staff. The peanut area is mainly covered with plastic, after the water recedes, use foliar fertilizer to spray. On both the damaged fertile land and high rice land, use short-term waxy corn varieties to get fresh corn or grow corn as animal feed.
On fertile land in Anh Son, Do Luong, Tan Ky, Nam Dan districts, etc., the corn planting season will last until October 30. Localities need to base on specific drainage conditions to organize planting on schedule.
For damaged vegetable areas, if they can still be saved, we will focus on taking care of them. If not, we will harvest them to sow another crop. At the same time, we will focus on closing the area of vegetables and cold-loving plants with high economic value.
