(Baonghean.vn) - "Many people are still indifferent to violence against women and girls" - Nghe An province's leaders raised this sad reality at the launching ceremony of the Month of Action for Gender Equality and Prevention of Gender-Based Violence 2017 organized by Nghe An Provincial People's Committee in Hung Nguyen district.

Attending the ceremony were comrade Le Minh Thong - Member of the Provincial Party Standing Committee, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee; leaders of provincial departments and branches; representatives of leaders of Hung Nguyen, Nghi Loc, Nam Dan, Thanh Chuong districts, Vinh City and Cua Lo town. |
Speaking at the launching ceremony, comrade Le Minh Thong affirmed: In recent years, the work of gender equality and prevention of gender-based violence in Nghe An has had positive changes, achieving many important results. Currently, women account for more than 50% of the province's workforce; the percentage of People's Council delegates at all levels is over 28%; 26% of women are business owners... Nghe An has hundreds of domestic violence-free clubs that have been established and maintained in good operation.
Nghe An has been prioritizing necessary resources to implement many solutions to gradually narrow the gender gap in all areas; further improve women and girls' access to health, education and employment services, especially women in disadvantaged areas; and gradually eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls.

The Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee also pointed out: Gender equality and gender-based violence prevention work still has many weaknesses, difficulties and challenges. Many people are still indifferent to violence against women and girls; collective awareness has not been built to fight against violations of the law related to violence against women and girls.
Early marriage and abuse still occur; divorce, cohabitation and premarital abortion are on the rise, leaving serious consequences in many aspects for families and society.

Launching the Action Month with the theme “Joining hands to end violence against women and girls”, Nghe An province requested agencies, organizations and all people, especially men, to actively participate in eliminating gender inequality and violence against women and girls.
