Who should limit their consumption of spinach?
Sweet potato leaves are a favorite dish for many, but not everyone can eat them. So, who should limit their consumption of sweet potato leaves?
Nutritional composition of sweet potato leaves
Sweet leaf (Sauropus androgynus) is a familiar vegetable in Vietnamese meals. It's not only delicious but also offers many health benefits. According to Tuoi Tre newspaper, Dr. Huynh Tan Vu, a lecturer in the Traditional Medicine Department at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy (Ho Chi Minh City), said that sweet leaf, also known as *Bo Ngot*, *Bu Ngot*, or *Hac Dien Than*, grows wild and is cultivated throughout Vietnam for its leaves, which are used in soups. When used as medicine, many people choose sweet leaf plants that are two years old or older, harvesting the fresh leaves for immediate use.
Some studies show that 100g of sweet potato leaves contain 6.5g of protein, 0.08g of fat, 9g of sugar, 503mg of potassium, 15.7mg of iron, and 85mg of vitamin C.
Therefore, spinach (compared to other leafy vegetables) contains more protein, iron, manganese, and provitamin A.
Because of its high quality plant protein, spinach is recommended as a substitute for animal protein to limit calcium metabolism disorders that cause osteoporosis and kidney stones.

Who should limit their consumption of spinach?
Although sweet potato leaves are nutritious, they are not suitable for everyone. An article by Dr. Phan Bich Hang from the Traditional Medicine Department of Hanoi Medical University, published in the Health & Life newspaper, states that the following cases are advised to limit their consumption of sweet potato leaves:
- Pregnant women:Some studies suggest that consuming too much spinach may cause uterine contractions, leading to a risk of miscarriage. Therefore, pregnant women, especially in the early months, should limit or avoid consuming spinach.
- People with kidney problems:Sweet potato leaves contain purines, a compound that can be metabolized into uric acid in the body. For people with kidney problems or gout, consuming sweet potato leaves may increase the risk of uric acid buildup, which is harmful to their health.
- People with low blood pressure:Spinach can lower blood pressure, so people with a history of low blood pressure should consider this before consuming it.
The above information answers the question "Who should not eat sweet potato leaves?". Sweet potato leaves are not only a nutritious food but also a valuable medicinal herb in traditional medicine, with many health benefits. However, their use should be appropriate to ensure safety and effectiveness.
