Since the beginning of 2018, cars imported from ASEAN countries to Vietnam will enjoy a 0% import tax incentive. This has partly created a mentality of waiting until 2018 to buy a car.
However, in addition to cars imported from ASEAN to Vietnam, there are many cars imported from other major markets such as: Korea, India, USA, Japan, Germany, etc. Cars imported from these non-ASEAN markets will almost always have the same price, or even be more expensive when the special consumption tax on large-engine cars is adjusted to increase sharply.

If nothing changes, in 2018, Toyota Fortuner, Honda Civic,… will reduce prices from the beginning of 2018. |
It is predicted that the reduction in vehicles will only occur for car models imported from the ASEAN region to Vietnam that are subject to a 0% import tax in 2018. However, to enjoy import tax incentives, not all car models are eligible.
According to AFTA commitments, 0% import tax is only applied to vehicles imported from ASEAN and with a local content in ASEAN greater than or equal to 40%. The remaining products that do not meet the conditions will not have their import tax rates adjusted.
Therefore, it is likely that only the following car models that have and will be able to meet the requirement of having a localization content in ASEAN greater than or equal to 40% will be able to reduce prices in 2018.
