However, Malabar spinach is not 100% "safe" for everyone. Although it has few side effects, in some cases, if used incorrectly and for the wrong person, Malabar spinach can also be harmful to health.

Not good for pregnant women

Malabar spinach is a dish that is warned for pregnant women because it is only effective for women after giving birth, or after miscarriage, premature birth, or abortion.

However, according to folk experience and some oriental medicine documents, Malabar spinach contains substances that can increase uterine contractions, so pregnant women are advised to consider or use it in moderation during the first months of pregnancy.

The 2002 Vietnamese Pharmacopoeia clearly states the recommendation: "Do not use papaverine for pregnant women."

Malabar spinach contains Papaverin, a substance found in opium, which has the effect of relaxing the smooth muscles of blood vessels to relieve pain and lower blood pressure.

If you use more than 30mg of fresh Malabar spinach, it can cause uterine contractions and easily lead to miscarriage.

Inhibits the absorption of calcium and phosphorus

In addition to supporting the body's metabolism, glucocorticoids that result from the metabolism of Malabar spinach leaves can interfere with the absorption of calcium and phosphorus.

It interferes with both calcium and phosphorus present in the Malabar spinach leaves themselves as well as in other foods eaten with Malabar spinach.

Causes insomnia, poor appetite

In Taiwan, it has been reported that people who drank Malabar spinach juice (150g) for 2 weeks to 7 months experienced side effects such as difficulty sleeping, poor appetite, and difficulty breathing.

According to research, the boiling process can also reduce the effects of Malabar spinach leaves. People with insomnia should avoid eating Malabar spinach because this vegetable contains substances that cause insomnia.
