These unique trash cans make everyone want to throw trash properly.
Trash cans are not simply places to store trash. From a creative and intelligent perspective, people have invented extremely unique multi-purpose trash cans: they can store trash, grow plants, act as wifi stations, automatic charging stations, fire alarm devices, etc.
Trash can with wifi capability
In late 2014, Bigbelly, a waste management company in New York (USA), tested two smart trash cans with wireless Internet connection in Manhattan. Accordingly, the Internet transmission speed of this smart trash can is up to 50-75 Mbs, enough for users to download an HD movie within 9 minutes or upload 200 photos within 27 seconds.

Big Belly has installed 170 smart trash cans in New York, of which 2 trash cans are equipped with free Wifi systems for residents and tourists in this area. In fact, all 170 trash cans installed in Manhattan are integrated with many modern features to become a useful smart device on the street. These trash cans use solar energy to operate.
They are designed with sensor chips that help to automatically monitor the amount of garbage in the bin, the level of odor emitted by each bin, and send signals to garbage collectors through a programmed system.
Some bins can even automatically shrink if they get too full to take more trash. “We’re using solar power for our bins as a way to connect smart technology to the streets of New York City,” says Leila Dillon, Big Belly’s vice president of global marketing. The smart systems in the bins can also display public service announcements and alerts.
Fireproof and bombproof trash cans
Also having the function of broadcasting free wifi, but in Chengdu, a city in Sichuan, Southwest (China) has also put into use public trash cans with wifi antennas. This type of trash can is even fireproof and bombproof. The lid will open automatically when someone approaches.

The two panels on the lid of the bin also act as solar panels. Excess electricity is stored in batteries placed underneath. These bins use solar energy to operate.

In addition to the function of storing trash, these public trash cans are also equipped with GPS to notify sanitation workers when it is time to take out the trash. This type of trash can is even fireproof and bombproof. The lid will automatically open when someone approaches. With the automatic sterilization function, the trash can will neutralize unpleasant odors. This Chinese radio station said that the people living here have named this type of trash can King Kong.
Store trash, grow plants and charge the battery at the same time
In Vietnam, smart trash can applications have also appeared in big cities such as Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang, sponsored by Bridgestone Tire Vietnam Co., Ltd.
In Ho Chi Minh City, this unique trash bin is divided into two compartments to separate inorganic and organic waste, and is also capable of nurturing green plants with a water filtration system inside the bin.

Inside this smart trash can are two trash baskets covered in plastic bags with small holes to let water flow into the trash can to feed the plants. |
These bins are designed like a cabinet, the sanitation workers can open the door to collect the trash. The outside of the bin is painted white, with recycling wheels on both sides to plant trees.
In addition, this smart trash can uses fluorescent decals that can glow at night so that passersby can easily see and throw trash in the right place.

Trash bins in Da Nang are designed with 3 main functions: classifying recyclable waste (cans, bottles, paper, etc.) - organic waste (food, fruit peels, etc.), filtering water - planting trees and charging phone batteries with solar energy. Photo: IT |
At first glance, many people think that the smart trash can will move to collect trash because it has 2 green wheels on each side. However, the intelligence and uniqueness of this trash can is to nourish green trees.
The structure of the trash bin is very special, at the bottom of the bin there are filter layers, including a foam layer to separate the trash, a layer of grit and a layer of gravel at the bottom that will help water flow through, permeate with two pots of green plants placed in tires on the side. From there, the green plants will be supplied with water and nourished by this trash bin for a long time.

Similar to Ho Chi Minh City, trash bins in Da Nang also have a solar-powered charging function. This feature attracts the attention of many tourists, especially foreign tourists, creating an interesting highlight for the coastal city.
The battery charging process is quite simple: sunlight shining through the solar panel on the side of the box will be converted into electricity and charged into the battery (4Ah-12V). This current will be conducted through the USB port so that the user can connect the wire to charge the phone battery.

"Since this special trash can was introduced, the walking street has become greener and the trash can no longer smell. Sorting trash is no longer difficult. However, there are still some people who lack awareness and conveniently throw trash into the bin without sorting it as on the lid. Even because the mouth of the bin is a bit small, many people are afraid of getting their hands dirty so they leave the trash on the lid," a cleaning staff on the walking street shared.
According to the sanitation workers here, the trash cans are smart, but what's important is each person's awareness in protecting the environment in public places.
