“Up to now, the whole Hung Chinh commune has 16 households doing farm economics in the fields with a total area of 30 hectares. The farms are all far from residential areas so environmental issues are always guaranteed. The commune also recommends that breeders not use banned substances in livestock farming to ensure the health of consumers,” said Mr. Nguyen Hong Quang - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Hung Chinh commune.
On an area of 4 hectares of ineffective low-lying rice fields, the family of Mr. Ho Duc Hong and Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa in Hamlet 1, Hung Chinh Commune, has converted 2.1 hectares of ponds to raise traditional fish such as grass carp and silver carp. The fish raised by Mr. Hong's family are not caught in concentrated areas but instead open a fishing service. With a price of 25,000 VND/ fishing hour/ person, the average daily income is 1 million VND. Each year, the family of Mr. Hong and Ms. Hoa earns 250-300 million VND from 2.1 hectares of fish ponds.
The pond bank area is used for livestock barns and growing vegetables, fruit trees such as grapefruit, bananas, etc. Currently, Mr. Hong and Ms. Hoa's farm has 4 breeding sows and 1,000 laying ducks. In addition, seasonal animals raise 3 batches of meat ducks each year, each batch from 1,000-1,500 ducks. Excluding the cost of feed and breeding, each year Mr. Hong and Ms. Hoa's family earns 150-200 million VND from raising ducks and pigs.
At the same time, on an area of 1.5 hectares of rice fields, they both grow rice and raise fish, each year harvesting 13-15 tons of rice and 1 ton of fish. Mr. Hong's family also invested in buying 2 multi-function plows and 1 combine harvester, each year earning 100 million VND from land preparation and rice harvesting services, raising the total income of the farm to 700 million VND/year.
In Dong Vinh Ward, there are 40 small and medium-sized farms raising chickens and ducks with a total area of 50 hectares, supplying the market with 350,000 chicken and duck eggs per day and hundreds of tons of commercial fish per year.
With a flock of hundreds of thousands of chickens and ducks, on average every day, Mr. Nguyen Duc Luan's 120,000-egg laying hen farm in Yen Due block supplies the market with 180,000 eggs per month. After deducting expenses, he earns a net profit of 500 million VND per year.
Mr. Le Van Thang, Trung Nghia hamlet, Dong Vinh ward, has a 1.5 hectare pond specializing in raising fish fry, producing 1 ton of fish fry each year to supply to the market of Vinh city and neighboring districts. "Compared to rice production, fish farming is 3-4 times more profitable. The current difficulty is that the canals are damaged and degraded, the river water is increasingly shallow, and in the dry season there is not enough water to supply the pond, which also affects the efficiency of fish farming" - Mr. Thang shared.
