Hot investigation into Russian interference in US election: Mr. Flynn admits to lying

December 2, 2017 20:25

A major development has occurred in the investigation into alleged Russian interference in the US election when the former US security adviser admitted to lying to the FBI.

Just hours after the Office of Special Counsel charged former US National Security Adviser Michael Flynn with lying to the FBI about his ties to Russia, Flynn admitted to lying to the FBI. Analysts said Flynn's admission of guilt will further complicate the investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 US presidential election.

Mr. Flynn said his decision to plead guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and cooperate in the investigation into President Donald Trump's ties to Russia was "made in the best interests of his family and the country."

“I acknowledge that the actions I have taken in court were wrong and I am working to make things right. My admission and commitment to the Office of Special Counsel reflect my decision to do what is best for my family and the United States. I take full responsibility for my actions.”

According to prosecutors, Mr. Flynn received instructions from “a very senior member” of President Donald Trump’s transition team regarding a vote at the United Nations in December 2016.

It is unclear why Mr. Flynn did not tell the truth to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. However, under US law, it is illegal for a US citizen in Mr. Flynn's role to conduct diplomatic affairs without the permission and participation of the US Government. According to US media, by admitting the above crime, Mr. Flynn may not have to face a trial.

Mr. Flynn is the highest-ranking US official to be charged in the investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election. The charges against Mr. Flynn are part of an investigation by the Office of Special Counsel under the direction of Mr. Robert Mueller, special prosecutor, investigating suspected Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election.

According to analysts, if Mr. Robert Mueller has evidence to prove Mr. Flynn's statements are true, this will be the biggest scandal in the investigation into Russian interference in the US election. This fact shows that the investigation is expanding in scope and Mr. Flynn is not the biggest fish caught in the net.

“Prosecutors are typically very careful about what they say,” said Miriam Baer, a law professor at Brooklyn Law School. “If they refer to a very senior official in a statement and then in another statement they refer to a senior official, that means they are looking at more than one person in President Donald Trump’s transition team.”

US media speculate that another senior official of President Donald Trump's administration continues to be under investigation, possibly Jared Kushner - advisor and son-in-law of President Trump.

The White House immediately responded to the statement, saying that Mr. Flynn's admissions would only concern Mr. Flynn. US President Donald Trump has not commented on Mr. Flynn's move. However, immediately after the news of Mr. Flynn's admission, the White House canceled a press conference with the participation of President Donald Trump.

Mr. Flynn is currently the central figure in the investigation by the US Congress, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the US Department of Defense on allegations related to the so-called "Russian interference in the US election". Mr. Flynn had to resign as US National Security Advisor last February, just 23 days after taking office because he admitted to having contact with the Russian Ambassador to the US while serving as an election adviser to candidate Donald Trump and not fully reporting this meeting.

So far, Russian officials have denied US allegations of interference in last year's US presidential election. Russia has called this "baseless" and "absurd". For his part, President Donald Trump has also denied all allegations that his campaign team colluded with Russia and called the investigation a "witch hunt"./.
