Female accountant embezzled billions from electronics store for investing in virtual currency and stocks
Taking advantage of the trust of the electronics store owner, Hang committed fraud and appropriated more than 1.6 billion VND. With the money she appropriated, the female accountant played with virtual currency and invested in stocks.
On February 19, Nghe An Provincial People's Court opened the first instance trial of defendant Cao Thi Thuy Hang (born 1986), residing in Le Loi ward, Vinh city, for the crime of "Abuse of trust to appropriate property".
According to the case file, in 2019, Cao Thi Thuy Hang was hired by the owner of the HQ electronics store (located in Nghi Kim commune, Vinh city) as a sales employee. Nearly 3 years later, Hang was assigned the additional task of being an accountant by the store owner.

Hang's task is to monitor customer agents in Ha Tinh, enter sales data into sales software, export sales, check and compare debt payments of agents...
From March 2023 to July 2023, taking advantage of the trust of the electronics store owner and their failure to regularly check and reconcile the cash flow of purchases and sales, he committed fraudulent acts.
Accordingly, Hang contacted 15 agents in Ha Tinh, providing false information such as the store owner urging debt payment; helping agents extend debt; reducing discount prices when purchasing goods to request agents to transfer money for goods and debt to her account with an amount of more than 1.9 billion VND.
To conceal her actions, Hang transferred more than 270 million to the store's account, and wrote the transfer content as the agents' names, changing the money transfer information.
After that, Hang quit her job. At this time, the store owner checked and discovered the employee's fraudulent behavior, so he filed a report with the police. The investigation agency determined that the total amount of money Cao Thi Thuy Hang had embezzled from the HQ electronics store was more than 1.6 billion VND.
At the trial, the defendant admitted to the crime. The defendant said that because of debt from losing investments in virtual currency and online stocks, he committed the act of defrauding the agents of the electronics store where he was working.
Realizing that his actions were wrong, the defendant has influenced his family to remedy all the consequences for the victim. The representative of the electronics store has filed a petition to reduce the defendant's sentence.
After comprehensively reviewing the case, the People's Court sentenced defendant Cao Thi Thuy Hang to 9 years in prison for the crime of abuse of trust to appropriate property.
