Female student from remote commune in Nghe An province achieved top prize in History and Geography

Nguyen Thi Hoai Linh was born and raised in a poor rural area in Team 3, Bai So village, Tam Quang commune, Tuong Duong district. Her mother is a farmer, working hard all year round. Her father is a freelancer, doing whatever job anyone hires him to do, as long as he can earn some legitimate money through his labor to support his two children's education and family expenses.

In order to not disappoint her parents' upbringing and care, Linh always tries hard and studies hard. Thanks to her diligence and love of learning, from grade 1 to grade 9 Linh has always achieved the title of excellent student. Notably, at the Nghe An Province Excellent Student Competition for secondary school students, Nguyen Thi Hoai Linh was the valedictorian in History and Geography. Not only is Linh good at Geography and History, but she also studies other subjects well and is praised by her teachers. In addition, Linh also enthusiastically participates in movements organized by her class, school, and team. Linh said: "I am passionate about and love studying History and Geography. Because studying History helps me understand deeply about events that happened in the past and the process of formation and struggle for independence of previous generations. Studying Geography helps me understand more about countries in the world, about natural and social factors... The more I study, the more interesting I find it, and I am truly fascinated by it."

Linh “reveals” how to study History to make it easy to memorize and remember: “Every morning I wake up early to study, I often read the lesson for the day in advance and outline the main ideas so that when the teacher lectures, it will be easier to remember and understand. In class, I pay attention to what the teacher says, take careful notes and boldly ask the teacher about the content I don’t understand.”

Because her family is poor, after finishing middle school, Linh said that she will not take the entrance exam to specialized schools in the city but will study at a local school. “It doesn’t matter where you study as long as you try your best in your studies. Studying far from home will not only not help your parents with housework, but also cost you money for rent, food, etc. while your family is in difficult circumstances. When I graduate from high school, I will take the entrance exam to a police or military school so that my parents will have less to worry about when it comes to education,” Linh shared.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong - mother of Nguyen Thi Hoai Linh said: "Linh is very hard-working, going to school in the morning, helping her mother with the farm in the afternoon. On days when she has vegetables, peanuts or potatoes, she takes them to the market to sell for extra income. Linh mainly studies in the evening and early morning. She was valedictorian in both subjects, which surprised me."

Commenting on Linh, teacher Duong Thi Huong, History teacher at Tam Quang Secondary School (teacher who directly trained Linh): “Linh is a good student. Although her family situation is difficult, she has a very good sense of learning, studies hard and learns lessons very quickly. Although she is an excellent student at school, Linh is always modest and open in helping her friends study together to progress together.”

At the provincial excellent student exam for grade 9, school year 2020 - 2021, Tuong Duong district won 38 prizes, including 3 first prizes, 15 second prizes, 9 third prizes. This is the best achievement of Tuong Duong district so far./.
