Raising 'miracle' species without spending money on food, earning tens of millions/crop
Farmers in Ky Ha commune (Ky Anh town, Ha Tinh) are expanding the model of raising Pacific oysters on ropes. This type of oyster is considered a "miracle drug", does not cost money to buy food, and brings in tens of millions of dong per crop.

In recent years, dozens of households living near the estuary of Vinh River and Quyen River in Ky Ha Commune, Ky Anh Town have expanded their Pacific oyster farming model. This milk oyster species is considered a "miracle drug", easy to raise, low cost, farmers have boldly expanded the scale, pocketing tens of millions of dong per crop. Along the estuary of Vinh River and Quyen River (Ky Ha Commune), there are currently nearly 120 large and small oyster rafts owned by nearly 60 households in Nam Ha and Bac Ha villages. |

The hanging-rope oyster farming model has a fairly simple farming technique. Farmers prepare rafts that can withstand the growing volume of oysters. This is a species of oyster originating from Japan, with a fast growth rate and wide distribution. Oyster seeds cling to the substrate. |

Farmers divide the oyster lines into many small strings. Every 5 oyster growing substrates are arranged on each string, from one string to the next 20-30cm apart, each row of strings is 30-40cm apart. Each ocean milk oyster string has up to 30-40 oysters, weighing about 15kg. |

Each 100m2 oyster raft will yield 1.3-1.5 tons of oyster shells. The price per kilogram of oyster shells ranges from 25,000-30,000 VND, and the price of shelled oysters ranges from 80,000-120,000 VND/kg. Each 100m2 raft can earn farmers from 20-25 million VND. |

Mr. Nguyen Tien Thang, Vice Chairman of Ky Ha Commune People's Committee, said that in 2015, Ky Anh Town People's Committee sent officials to visit and learn about the Pacific oyster farming model in Quang Ninh province, including some farmers. Since then, Mr. Thang and the people have brought this model back to raise, develop and expand in Ky Ha commune, bringing high economic efficiency. |

In 2016, the People's Committee of Ky Ha commune piloted 7 rafts for Pacific oyster farming. Each raft was supported with a maximum of 30 million VND. Realizing that this is an effective farming model with low investment capital, people have boldly invested even though there is no longer a support mechanism. |

Mr. Le Quang Nhuan (70 years old, Bac Ha village, Ky Ha commune) said that this year his family invested in 3 rafts, each raft costing 15 million VND. "Oyster farming costs less than shrimp and fish farming, and there is no need to spend money on oyster feed. The output is stable, and the technique of hanging oysters on fishing lines is also simple. Commercial oysters can be harvested in about 5-6 months," said Mr. Nhuan. |
