Raising sows in combination with Taiwanese fish farming in Quynh Luu.

Sows are raised in a clean environment, ensuring hygiene and disease prevention.

Mr. Ho Tat Quy's pig farm is located on agricultural land in the commune, about 2km from the residential area, making it a suitable location for developing livestock farming.

We met him while he was operating an automatic bathing system for his pigs in the hot weather. His modern, enclosed pig farm features pens constructed from iron pipes, an automatic bathing system, and a schedule for monitoring the health and breeding times of the sows.

Mr. Quy shared that he used to work as a construction laborer and then a builder. During a visit to a friend in the North, he saw that his friend's pig farm, both for breeding and commercial purposes, was thriving. After learning about effective pig farming methods from his friend, he returned to his hometown and opened a pig farm to develop his economy.

With limited experience in pig farming, thanks to advice from a friend, Mr. Quy leased nearly 1 hectare of land in the local area, which was previously unproductive for rice cultivation, to convert it into pig farming. At the end of 2011, he borrowed money from the bank, along with contributions from family and friends, totaling 1.4 billion VND, to invest in building barns and purchasing 36 breeding sows from CP Vietnam Livestock Corporation. These were high-quality, reputable Thai breeding sows.

After one year of raising them, the 36 sows began to reproduce; the pigs gave birth to 2 litters per year, with 12 piglets per litter. In the first year, the herd of foreign breed sows produced 792 piglets, all of which were sold to villagers and traders. His income from pork and piglets reached hundreds of millions of dong per year.

Recognizing the effectiveness of breeding sows, at the end of 2015, he increased the number of sows to 70 and invested 70 million VND to buy two high-quality Taiwanese Duroc boars for breeding.

Thanks to proper care and the application of advanced farming techniques, his family's pig herd always grows quickly and rarely suffers from disease outbreaks.

“To ensure healthy and rapid growth of pigs, it is crucial to vaccinate them against livestock diseases. Maintaining clean and hygienic pens is also essential for their rapid growth. Our family's farming philosophy is to keep our pens warm in winter and cool in summer; we use high-quality, reputable commercial feed,” Mr. Quy shared.

Regarding the market for his piglets, Mr. Quy said that out of 1,540 piglets, he sold about 700 to local people, traders came to his farm to buy over 400, and his family raised 300 for meat.

The farm produces high-quality breeding stock for local livestock farmers.

Mr. Ho Quang Tuan, Chairman of the People's Committee of Quynh Doi commune, Quynh Luu district, said: "The pig breeding business of Mr. Ho Tat Quy's family is a large-scale model in the locality and the entire Quynh Luu district. The breeding process ensures environmental protection and does not cause pollution. Besides selling piglets to other places, he also supplies a considerable number of piglets to local people to develop their own pig farming, and many pig farming households have become quite prosperous."

Besides raising pigs, Mr. Ho Tat Quy also dug ponds to raise tilapia. Snakehead fish farming yields a profit of 300 million VND per year.

With standardized farming practices, in March 2015, the Nghe An Provincial Department of Agricultural, Forestry and Fisheries Quality Management awarded a certificate of food safety compliance to the pig farm of Mr. Ho Tat Quy's family.

Currently, Mr. Quy is raising 26,000 Taiwanese monosex tilapia fingerlings. Loan and 12,000 snakehead fish.
