(Baonghean.vn) - For many years now, farmers in Yen Thanh district have been developing the practice of raising ducks in rice paddies, following the rice harvests throughout the year. This profession not only reduces investment costs and improves economic efficiency but also provides a source of clean food for the market.

For many years, Mr. Tran Quang Giang (Hamlet 9, Xuan Thanh Commune) has invested in developing free-range duck farming. When the rice plants begin to flower, it's also the time he raises ducks. Based on his experience, he pays special attention to caring for the ducklings during the early stages, when they are not yet strong enough to forage for food. Their feed during this period mainly consists of rice bran and corn bran mixed with finely chopped crab and snails to ensure sufficient nutrition. Because the free-range ducks live in a natural environment, they receive vaccinations against diseases during the first 25 days.

During the rice harvest season, he releases his ducks into the fields to eat the scattered rice grains and forage for natural food. On average, Giang raises over 2,000 ducks per season, and after only two months of free-range farming, the ducks weigh between 1.8 and 2 kg each.

During harvest season, farmers in Yen Thanh begin releasing ducks into the fields to forage for natural food in the rice paddies.

This summer-autumn season alone, his family invested 60 million VND to raise 2,500 free-range ducks, and they expect to sell 5 tons of commercial duck meat in about a month. At the current market price of 35,000 VND/kg, his family will earn approximately 170 million VND. After deducting initial investment costs, this will yield a high profit in a short period of time.

Because they are mainly raised in a natural environment, experienced duck farmers always prioritize vaccinating ducks at around one month old to limit disease outbreaks.

With the potential advantages of an agricultural district, boasting over 13,000 hectares of cultivated land, producing two rice crops per year, and nearly 2,000 hectares of ponds and lakes, not to mention the system of rivers and canals, free-range duck farming has become a traditional occupation for farmers in Yen Thanh.

Free-range ducks are usually local or hybrid breeds, so they have high resistance to disease and are very agile. Due to their high level of movement, free-range ducks don't grow as large as some other breeds, but their meat is firm, flavorful, and nutritious. Free-range duck is a clean food source and is currently very popular in the market, so demand is always stable.

For many years, free-range duck farming has been a traditional occupation of the people in Yen Thanh district, known for its rice production.

However, according to the experience of many households, raising ducks in open fields is not always easy. Because the ducks forage in the vast fields, there is often a loss of the total flock size. Although the ducklings are vaccinated from the time they are raised, during periods of unpredictable sunny and rainy weather, ducks roaming in the fields are often susceptible to disease. Therefore, farmers must constantly monitor them to implement appropriate breeding and disease prevention measures.

Currently, in Yen Thanh district, in addition to the 200,000 original ducks raised in confinement to supply breeding stock and commercial eggs, approximately 400,000 ducks are also raised free-range in the fields each season. Many households with sufficient economic resources and labor often raise 3,000 to 4,000 free-range ducks, mainly fed on various natural food sources readily available in the fields. This allows the ducks to grow quickly, reaching marketable size after only two months, significantly reducing costs for farmers.

Duck farming in the rice-growing district of Yen Thanh is becoming a stable source of income, contributing to job creation and legitimate wealth accumulation for farmers.
