Apple snails and leaf rollers wreak havoc on summer-autumn rice

(Baonghean.vn)-Summer-autumn rice is entering the growth stage. However, harmful pests and diseases are emerging in the fields, threatening the growth of rice.

For many days now, people in hamlets 3, 4, and 5 of Thanh Dong commune (Thanh Chuong) have had to regularly go to the fields adjacent to Thanh Tuong commune to catch golden apple snails that are damaging summer-autumn rice.

According to Mr. Ty in Hamlet 3, Thanh Dong Commune, golden apple snails are one of the pests that are very difficult to control. Mr. Ty's experience is to catch snails and egg nests in the evening or early morning; dig drainage ditches 10 - 15m apart so that golden apple snails gather in the ditch, or drive stakes around the bank for snails to lay eggs and stick to them to kill them, then collect them by hand.

Currently, the golden apple snail is causing damage to all rice fields in the district, especially in low-lying areas with water all year round. According to the district's Department of Agriculture, the area of ​​rice infected with golden apple snail is up to more than 1,000 hectares.

Besides golden apple snails, leaf rollers are also developing strongly in Dong Van, Thanh Linh, Thanh Dong, Xuan Tuong communes... which are localities that plant early summer-autumn rice.

Currently, in communes with early planting areas, leaf rollers have appeared with a density of 30 - 50 individuals/m2, locally up to 100 individuals/m2. The characteristic of leaf rollers is that they do not hatch simultaneously over a large area but according to the age of the rice fields, so the District Plant Protection and Cultivation Station regularly assigns staff to stay close to the base, monitor the situation and coordinate with localities to direct people to prevent and control rice promptly and effectively.

According to the survey results of Nam Dan Plant Protection Station, currently in the whole district, more than 300 hectares out of a total area of ​​6,100 hectares of summer-autumn rice have been damaged by small leaf rollers, with a common density of 30 - 50 individuals/m2, in some places the density is up to more than 100 individuals/m2.

The Plant Protection Station has coordinated with local departments and agencies to closely follow the grassroots to organize propaganda and guide farmers to promptly prevent and control leaf rollers.

Currently, Nam Dan farmers are also focusing on the fields to kill golden apple snails that harm rice.
