In a 24-minute speech at the White House on November 15, US time, President Trump tried to defend his recent trip to five Asian countries, which he said helped unite the world on the North Korea issue, paving the way for a "free and open Indo-Pacific region" and "free, mutually beneficial" trade relations with the Pacific Rim.
Regarding the North Korea issue, Mr. Trump said he had a positive meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping and agreed with Beijing and other countries to increase pressure on Pyongyang's missile and nuclear programs.
On trade, the US president during his trip called on leaders to narrow the US trade deficit and urged countries to buy military equipment from Washington.
He also warned of further steps to protect American businesses and workers. However, he did not mention the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement, which is trying to survive after the US withdrew in March 2017.
He asserted that America has never been more respected globally and that Americans are once again "optimistic about the future, confident in our principles and proud of our history and our role in the world."
"The days of America being taken advantage of are over," he declared in the Guardian. The US president did not take any questions after his speech.
Previously, many opinions said that Mr. Trump's tour of five Asian countries, including Vietnam, Japan, South Korea, China and the Philippines, did not have many breakthroughs.
