Speaking at a joint White House press conference with Kuwait's Emir Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, President Trump said: "Military action is certainly an option. Is it inevitable? Nothing is inevitable."

Assuming military action was required, Mr Trump said: "That would be a very bad day for North Korea."

Meanwhile, North Korean Foreign Economic Affairs Minister Kim Young-jae said Pyongyang would take strong measures to respond to any "plot" to impose sanctions and pressure from the US.

US Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said that if the United Nations does not impose additional sanctions on North Korea over its nuclear tests, he is ready to submit an executive order to President Donald Trump for approval to impose sanctions on any country that conducts trade with Pyongyang./.
