President Trump, wearing a yarmulke - a traditional Jewish garment - placed his right hand on the wall, eyes closed.
The US leader appears to have inserted a piece of paper with a prayer in it into a crack in the wall, a tradition followed by visitors to the Western Wall.
Despite requests from Israeli officials, Mr. Trump, his wife and son-in-law Jared Kushner, a Jew, arrived at the location unaccompanied.
The Wailing Wall (also known as the Western Wall), is the holiest site for the Jewish religion.
It is located in the Israeli-controlled area of East Jerusalem. The special location of the Western Wall added more significance to Mr. Trump's visit.
Both Israel and Palestine claim Jerusalem as their capital. The Israeli constitution states that Jerusalem is the capital of the country, but the US does not recognize it.
This led to a situation where the nominal capital of Israel was Jerusalem but the de facto capital was Tel Aviv.

According to the US television station NBC, more than 10,000 Israeli security personnel were mobilized to protect Mr. Trump's visit to Jerusalem.
An operation called "Blue Shield" was also deployed to ensure security during the US leader's visit.
