According to a US official, classified information that President Donald Trump disclosed to Russian officials in May related to an Israeli cyberattack on an IS bomb-making cell.

The New York Times quoted the official as saying that in the first weeks of 2017, Israeli cyber activists attacked a bomb-making group for the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) in Syria.

The Israelis discovered that the group intended to manufacture small explosives, similar to computer batteries. These "batteries" would then be placed in laptops and smuggled into airports, where they would be passed by X-ray detectors.

According to the official, President Trump is said to have told Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Russian Ambassador to the US Sergey Kislyak about the classified intelligence information during a meeting on May 10.

At the time, sources said, “Middle Eastern allies” who had gathered the intelligence asked the US not to share it.

However, on May 15, national security adviser Herbert McMaster said that the President could not have known that Israel was the source of the information, because Mr. Trump himself was not informed of this.

Another report from White House officials said Tel Aviv was furious that Mr Trump may have "leaked key information about IS".

The report said Israel shared the intelligence with the stipulation that the recipient would not forward it to anyone, even an ally. An anonymous source said Israel had planted people in IS and that Mr. Trump’s disclosure of the information could endanger the lives of their spies.

According to Sputnik, during a hearing on May 23 before the House Intelligence Committee, former CIA Director John Brennan said that Mr. Trump shared intelligence information, violating diplomatic protocol.

Accordingly, President Trump shared the information personally instead of through intelligence channels. In addition, Mr. Trump also did not send the original report for revision to protect the source of the information before sharing it.
